Oaks Day at the Races in Melbourne

Dear Friends!

I am so sorry for not writing anything earlier. I have been extremely busy with exams and everything. However, I have decided it is about time to post a blog about my time in Melbourne. Also, since I now have a lot of friends of other nationalities than Norwegian, I choose to write in English so that I don't exclude anyone. Please bear over my grammar since it is late (over midnight).

To make the whole blog thing a little more interesting for you guys, I want to write about the Oaks Day at the races in Melbourne. Some of you are probably already familiar with the races some are not. I have to admit that I had no idea what it was before Marika (my very good Australian friend) convinced me to go there on Oaks Day to have a break from the studies.

Every year in the end of October and beginning of November, Melbourne houses a huge horserace that attracts people from all over Australia in addition to prominent people from other continents. It is a week of glamour, betting and fashion like nothing else I have ever experienced. All the girls invest in new dresses and the guys dress up in nice suits. In other words, just like I like it.

Claire (my room mate) and I decided it was about time to enjoy our selves instead of reading and studying, so we went to Bridge street and found some stunning dresses (at least we think they are;). The best thing is that you have to wear either a hat or a fascinator (similar to a hat, but smaller) in order to be properly dressed. As Claire and I have never worn or owned either a hat or a fascinator, we were very excited about that. Just to make it even more difficult for our selves, we decided to make the fascinators on our own instead of buying a professional one. We had this completely unrealistic idea that it would probably only take an hour or so. It took six hours! We finished the thing at half past 2 am, just in time to get three and a half hours of sleep. Believe me when I say that you have never before seen someone so tired as we were when we woke up the next day. Also, we were confident that somewhere in our genes, we should have sufficient skills to make these fascinators. He he, it's up to you to judge what you think, I have posted the pictures of our art works in the picture gallery for your pleasure. I have to say that I really enjoyed the experience, and that I totally recommend you guys to come to the races one day.

I really enjoyed the experience, and hope to go there once more another year.

However, a warning to you all. Believe me when I say that you should wear high SPF when you go to Australia. Although we used 30+ in SPF and reapplied several times, we got really sunburned. I got a "tattoo" on my back now that I would rather be without. Not a pretty sight!

Anyway, I am enjoying Melbourne although I totally miss John Kristian and all you other guys in Norway (and on exchange).

Do not hesitate to leave a comment or anything;)

Love ya all!
